Store Enso invests in Carbon Materials

Stora Enso will build a pilot facility at the end of 2019 to produce bio-based carbon materials based on lignin; it will be finished by early 2021. This wood-based carbon can be utilized as a crucial component in batteries for consumer electronics, automotive industry and for energy storage. This plant will be located in Stora Enso’s facilities in Sunila Mill in Finland.

Manufacturing carbon materials so they can replace fossil-based and mined raw materials for energy storage is part of Stora Enso’s efforts to connect sustainable materials with ongoing technology innovations.

The importance of converting lignin into hard carbon intermediate for electrode materials that can be used for lithium-ion batteries used daily in things such as mobile phones, portable devices, power tools, electric vehicles, industrial applications and stationary energy storage, grid units, etc.
